Code: OPL/21/111 Induction B

This course is essential for all new governors and is also a great refresher course for those who have been involved in governance for longer. To complete the training, Induction A and Induction B must be completed. Among other things, this course will look at: • The purpose of governance • The board’s roles and responsibilities • Holding the school to account The organisation of the board It will also provide the background information around supporting your Headteacher with personnel matters, such as managing staff performance, and it will consider the expectations of governors around employment hearings. You will have the opportunity to ask questions around managing other HR issues that may arise. This course is relevant for all maintained boards although all schools are very welcome. We would strongly recommend that the Chair and/or the Vice-Chair from each school attends this session. This training is free to governors whose school subscribe to Governor Training, otherwise the cost is £150 per governor. Please be aware that Governor training is moving over to GovernorHub so please do familiarise yourself with the new system.

Code: LAC/21/020 Explore Alternatives to Exclusion

Book now course closing soon

Children We Care For are more likely to be excluded from school than any social or ethnic group. It is clear that meeting the needs of these complex young people, especially in relation to their Social, Emotional and Mental Health, presents a significant challenge in school. At the same time many teachers and school leaders feel that their authority has been eroded, and are looking for different ways of addressing challenging behaviour. There are powerful national narratives about ‘zero tolerance approaches’, but in many cases these seem to lead to higher rates of exclusion, often for the most vulnerable learners, and staff continue to feel deskilled and powerless. This session will explore alternatives to exclusion that can also contribute to building constructive and legitimate authority in schools, empowering staff and helping all children to feel safer. It will present theories, ideas and areas for discussion with attendees that could be taken forward by schools from this brief introduction

Code: LAC/21/019 Session 6: Leaving Care – Why young people disappear

Book now course closing soon

Delivered by Luke Rogers - BEM Director of Strategy, The Care Leaders. This session shows you how young people can transition from care into independent and meaningful lives. Leaving care is a cliff age. When young people reach a certain age or status, overnight their support can disappear, leaving them to navigate complex and tricky systems to gain support and access to crucial services, such as education and housing. All children are classed as ‘adults’ and will have left care by 18; many leave well before this. We see a huge number of young people from care becoming homeless, not attending education, unemployed and having higher levels of mental health issues than their peers. These are the young people we know about; many young people just disappear. Leaders are frustrated at the lack of provision; practitioners worry, and young people are invisible. Young people deserve to lead successful independent lives with relationships that last a lifetime. Please review course objectives for booking instructions, as this is an external event.
