Code: OPL/19/135 Monitoring: the governors’ role

Governors agree the school budget and headteacher appraisal objectives based primarily on their agreed school improvement plans for the coming year. To be effective, the board then needs evidence to demonstrate the impact these plans are having on the pupils within the school. Understanding what is happening in the school, its strengths and weaknesses, can take some considerable time. How this is achieved can vary but it will always mean having access to the right level of information from as many sources as possible. In addition, governors need evidence that the school is complying with its statutory duties. All of this evidence should be available through the monitoring work of the governing board. With this stream of monitoring evidence, the governing board can evaluate the success of their plans throughout the school year, take action to maximise the positive effects of their work and make changes, if need be, to ensure that the improvement plan has a positive impact on pupils and that the school is legally compliant in all areas. This training is free to governors whose school subscribe to Governor Training, otherwise the cost is £150 per governor.
