Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSAs) are Teaching Assistants who have received specific training from Educational Psychologists from whom they receive on-going supervision following training. Their role is to support children and young people in school to understand and regulate their own emotions, learn to respect themselves and others around them and develop their personal resilience.
Booking onto the course confirms:
• School agreement with all terms of involvement outlined in the ELSA Training Agreement 2022 (attached to this email)
• The school will release each ELSA for all 6 training days
• The school commits to fund both the training course (£680) and the first year of supervision, starting in September 2023 (£300)
• The school agrees to release each ELSA to attend a supervision session every half-term (starting from September 2023) for as long as they work as an ELSA
• The school will provide line manager support for the ELSA
• The line manager will attend the first, virtual, session alongside the ELSA
• The school agrees to allocate time each week, as specified in the Training Agreement, to ELSAs to fulfil their responsibilities.
When booking a place on the course it is important please provide the email contact of the ELSA, you will then be contacted for line manager details so they can attend the first virtual session.
Please downloaded and review all the 'Important Documents' before booking a place on this course, contact Oxfordshire County Council's Educational Psychology Department prior to booking to ensure you have all the required information about ELSA Training.
Line managers are requested to attended an introductory virtual session covering the initiative, effective ways of running ELSA within the school, expectations for ELSA's and the role their line managers have in supporting them. This session will be held on 28th September 2022 between 9:15 am and 11:15 am further details will follow after your booking has been confirmed.
Once training has been completed ELSA's must attend a full year of supervision which will be charged at £300 (please note this is additional to the £680 course fee)
All resources will be provided including a folder of resources and copy of ‘Emotional Wellbeing: An Introductory Handbook for Schools’ by Sheila Burton and Gillian Shotton.

Six days of training from the Educational Psychology Service (EPS), provide ELSA's with the skills to plan, deliver and evaluate bespoke interventions for identified pupils in their schools.
Provide the theory, support, and practical ideas to enable ELSAs to apply their learning to work with young people in schools.
Once training is complete a full year’s supervision with a qualified Educational Physiologist.
