Course aim
The unprecedented nature of the past year in education has created a need for ever more responsive and intuitive teaching in order that gaps can be filled and recovery secured. The purpose of this course is to support class teachers to develop high quality diagnostic planning, teaching and assessment in the summer term.

The course will deliver training for both writing and reading with phase specific exemplars, whilst ensuring consistent messages across the age range. Teachers will benefit from a range of ideas to adapt current planning, whilst ensuring a dynamic and responsive approach.

The introduction to the course will explore the Hampshire HIAS Assessment Guidance for Primary Schools for their year group. The framework articulates the minimum skills, knowledge and behaviours that children need in order for them to sufficiently access the next year group’s curriculum through formative assessment. It also forms the basis of an end of year summative view of achievement, to inform strategic planning for interventions and support next year.

A strength-based model is essential to ensure that clear starting points and a ‘can do’ approach to learning is embedded. Age-appropriate examples will be given to guide teaching in learning journey models and rich task designs to provide challenge for all. Practical tasks will ensure plenty of opportunities for teachers to engage in the course.
